Diversity
Visa Lottery Program: Frequently Asked Question What is the American Green Card Lottery? The
Green Card (Diversity Visa Program) was enacted by the United States Congress in
1965 to allocate 55,000 visas, "Green Cards" to applicants from
selected eligible countries from around the world through a lottery conducted by
the U.S. STATE DEPARTMENT. How does the Lottery work? Once
winners are selected through the lottery, they are notified by mail and advised
to attend an interview at the nearest United
States Consulate in their country to receive their Green Cards.
Winners already in the United States can schedule an interview with the
Immigration & Naturalization Service. Their
status can be adjusted without leaving the country. What are the benefits conferred by a green
card? Once
issued with a Green Card, a person gets the legal right to live, work, study and
own businesses and property in the United States. Many other benefits are also available. The Green Card is subject to renewal every ten years and in
the meantime, a person can enter and leave the country freely. Permanent
residents can also sponsor relatives for Green Cards.
After about five years, a Green Card holder can apply for United States
citizenship if desired since the Green Card does not affect the present
citizenship. Which countries qualify for the lottery? To
qualify, a person must have been born in one of the selected lottery countries. These
countries include all countries of the world except: Canada, China*, Columbia, Dominican
Republic, El Salvador, Haiti, India, Jamaica, Korea, Mexico, Pakistan,
Philippines, United Kingdom, and Vietnam. Also (*
Tai-Wan, Hong Kong and Northern Ireland are treated as a separate countries and
are eligible.) What are the other important requirements? You
must be eighteen (18) years old and can apply from wherever you are residing.
Must have a high school diploma or US high school equivalent or two years of
trained work experience. You must be able to work to support yourself.
No criminal record, must be mentally normal and offer no threat to the
security of the United States. Speaking or writing in English is not a
requirement. You do not need any
amount of money to apply and presence of relatives in the US does not affect
your application. What is the best time to submit an
application? Applications
can be submitted to DirectoryAfrica.com any time during the year so that they
can be submitted to the U.S. State Department within the correct 30 days period
announced about 8 weeks in advance. Personally submitted applications that
arrive at the U.S. State Department outside the 30 days period are automatically
disqualified. DirectoryAfrica.com ensures that applications processed through us
