Diversity Visa Lottery Program: Frequently Asked Question

What is the American Green Card Lottery?

The Green Card (Diversity Visa Program) was enacted by the United States Congress in 1965 to allocate 55,000 visas, "Green Cards" to applicants from selected eligible countries from around the world through a lottery conducted by the U.S. STATE DEPARTMENT.

How does the Lottery work?

Once winners are selected through the lottery, they are notified by mail and advised to attend an interview at the nearest United States Consulate in their country to receive their Green Cards. Winners already in the United States can schedule an interview with the Immigration & Naturalization Service.  Their status can be adjusted without leaving the country.

What are the benefits conferred by a green card?

Once issued with a Green Card, a person gets the legal right to live, work, study and own businesses and property in the United States.  Many other benefits are also available.  The Green Card is subject to renewal every ten years and in the meantime, a person can enter and leave the country freely. Permanent residents can also sponsor relatives for Green Cards.  After about five years, a Green Card holder can apply for United States citizenship if desired since the Green Card does not affect the present citizenship.
